Hello Miles,
I’d like to start by saying how much I love the knives you make. I’ve never seen anything like it. I was looking on Arizona Custom Knives and saw a blank your selling and had to buy it for my brother. I was curious if I would be able to ship the blank to you and pay for a handle, sheath and labor? I would love your complete artistry.
Best wishes,
Thomas Dougherty

Miles,
The knife arrived today. It exceeds our expectations. We are very happy. The wood in the rest, is especially interesting. We are happy we asked for the rest. It makes for a wonderful display. Knowing the material in the handle is amazing. I’m glad your still able to resource that.
Thank you for completing before your winter move south. We appreciate it. Have a wonderful winter in the sun.

My name is Jamie and I bought the two pieces of Ivory from you recently. You couldn’t find the one set and you cut me a second set more valuable. That concern and attitude is a lifestyle. I know you say you have a lot of ivory, but to receive what you gave me is really amazing. I try to be honest in my dealings with other and a good person. A helper as a lifestyle. I make specialty rings turned from wood, stone, wire etc. the ivory I bought is for a ring for my wife for our first wedding anniversary. I thank you for your heart in the matter and probably be buying a bunch of ivory from you. I would just to have the kind gesture returned. I know you may not get this for a while, I’m a hunter too. I’m not secluded like you, but don’t feel like you have to rush to respond. Thank you so much, you are an encouragement, I hope you know that.
I have one small question, do you certify any of the ivory?
Thank you again for your generosity,
Jamie Hector

At 77 and a woman who went her own way, I got back into knife making out of a one bedroom condo in Florida! I bought a blank from you about 8 or 9 years ago and finished it for a young man that I had trained in the printing industry. Glad you are still going strong.

Hi, Miles!
I got the shipment that I ordered and am very pleased……. I will be working on some knives that will incorporate the material. Here is a small hollow ground, tapered tang knife I will be grinding. Just had cataract surgery so I will have to heal up for a while. Thanks!

Hello Miles!
I’m in the midst of reading your fourth book. I find your life experiences very compelling and interesting. Thank you for sharing your story and your artwork.
I moved from Arkansas to remote west coast Alaska in 2014 to teach in the village of ScammonBay. I found it to be rewarding, interesting living and working there. I recognize many of the character traits and attitudes portrayed in your stories such as native Alaskans, Fish and Game, lawmen and legal issues, adventure seekers, subsistence living, etc.

Hi Miles. I hope u r well. I met you about 17 years ago at the Nenana Fair and have been following you ever since. We chatted for a while. I know that means nothing to you as you meet hundreds of people. Anyways glad to sign up for your newsletter. I have watched a few of your videos online and I'm currently in the middle of book 7 and enjoying the hell out of it. Just wanted to let you know that. I appreciate your writing. Your writing has always been easy to read and very informative and entertaining. I have read 7 so far and getting on line tonight to see if there is a book 8!! I have been to many parts of Alaska over the years, including Nenana twice, and had my wife almost convinced a few years back to move to your great state. However now that I am almost 60 and have grandkids in the lower 48, the possibility of moving there is getting remote. But, by reading your books, watching your videos and now your newsletters, I can relive some of the memories I have had visiting, fishing and exploring there over the years. Our last trip in 2019, we got some great pictures of the aurora between Fairbanks and Chena hot springs. I have been watching the remake of the website and hope to pick up something special soon. No need to reply if you are busy. Take care of yourself, be safe and I look forward to the newsletter. 👍

Good morning, Mr. Miles.
I thoroughly enjoyed and was inspired by your YouTube video Working Mammoth Ivory. I have a piece of ivory that was given to me and am interested in making 1911 grips with it. I think once I get it cut to. Size that I can figure out the stabilizing, epoxying, etc. I’m a pen maker and have some experience stabilizing with Cactus Juice. If you don’t mind, I have a few questions for you. Foremost is what do I cut the ivory with? I have a bandsaw in my shop and a table saw. Below are some pictures of the ivory I have. Would you be able to assess the quality of it by looking at the pictures. I’m not looking for a monetary value, but rather it’s worth the effort to work with. I also have a couple of mastodon teeth.
Your time and experience is greatly appreciated.
Respectfully,
April 10th
and am loving them! I'm on book 3 so far. I think what you did was amazing ! I would like to say if I had been a bit older and saw your ad I would have answered it to live in nature as you were doing, but I don't like the cold ;-) !
Having so much time to yourself in nature, I believe gave you a deep wisdom of who you are and how the world works. Refusing to be one of the sheep is one of the best things any human can do with their life!
May I ask where you are now and how is your life?
Thank you for putting your story into the world to inspire or wake up others :)
Sincerely,
Sylvia

Hey Miles,
I have been reading your books, I am on book 6 I think and wanted to thank you for inspiring me to get back into doing my art again. Just nice to think well I can actually make money off of the things I can do. I kind of already knew that because at my old job I could sell a couple hundred dollars a day of jewelry/art at Christmas time especially and a necklace earing set I gave to a friend to auction went for over $200, which was great helped his dad with his chemo, it was just a small town thing. But I live in a small town near a bunch of small towns and close to a reservation so I know about being hated for being white. Its a strange thing being the white person. I worked at a tribal casino for almost 18 years part of that time I was a housekeeper in the hotel and there were tribal members that stayed there that only would let other tribal people clean their hotel rooms, I always thought that was funny because wouldn't you rather see the white girl cleaning your toilet, or taking out your garbage? It is definitely a different world to fit yourself into.
Anyway I got off subject I am not very good with people either and you are probably better with internet crap than I am( just so you know I am female 46 years old) My mom died in 2020 and we were very close, add covid and getting fired from the casino , I was baking bread there by then 3 nights a week it was a pretty cushy job really showed up between 6-8 at night worked till I was done and never saw my bosses and I had like 3-5 of them, that was a good thing. I liked being able to get away with tribal time there, but getting fired finally after the threat for 5 years was great too, like perfect timing.
I would say Jesus factor but,, I don't get Jesus. I believe in God/Goddess a higher being. Anyway just really wrote to say thanks for being different and making some of us feel okay to not fit in with society, but deal with it anyway, and just to see maybe I can make it too.
Take care and do whatever with your top knot

HElko Miles, my name is Glenys, It was nice to hear back from you so soon. I'm 71 and have always had a love affair with Alaska. I have read so many stories of Alaska adventures but never ones so exciting as your experiences. I'm currently reading Beyond Wild. Yes I'm reading them in sequence. I've only been to Alaska once and that was on a cruise. I watch all the shows on Alaska but realize so much of it is probably made up to capture our imaginations. I have been absolutely mesmerized by your experiences.
I live in NE Nevada in a little town called Cherry Creek. My husband who passed away from cancer 15 months ago built a rammed earth home here. We've been here for 22 years. We traveled a lot with his job. I kept hoping his work would take us to Alaska but alas not to be. Your adventures have frightened me, thrilled me and kept me in awe. You are quite an amazing man. My husband was an adventurist also and we both believe as you do that civilizations freedoms are being taken away from us at an alarming rate. But what can I do.
March 1
Wow! I got it already! Really nice piece! I like the blue in it. I'm looking forward to getting some more from you in the future.

Hi Miles
I'm now on Book 5, and felt compelled to just reach out and say how much I have enjoyed your writings! Your accomplishments speak volumes of your courage, dedication, ability and persistence.
Unlike you, I never achieved my dream of a wilderness subsistence life....caught up in the world of business, industry, and succumbed to pursuing the $buck. That worked well for me, but never gave the satisfaction of your lifestyle- Freedom.
Thanks for telling it like it was, and is....I've subscribed to all of your options on your website. Glad to have "met" you-
Stay well, stay safe...

Dear Mr. Martin,
Welcome to the lower 48! Thank you for your address, I’ll have the saber tooth piece in the mail tomorrow. The package will be insured but would you like me to request a signature upon delivery? I’m sorry for not thanking you earlier for the ivory you sent. I was quite humbled at the amount and quality of it. The blue is really fun to tease an image out of! I chose a small piece to play with and get a feel for it. Splitting scales intimidates me but I go slow and easy and am learning to “read” the ivory. One of the brown scales has a nice cream backside so I’m thinking of a hunting scene - cold plains, wind and game, on the dark side, with a domestic scene - cooking, families and warm home feel, on the cream side. Should be fun. I like your idea of a flying turkey on the turkey call. It could be stunning! What a beautiful piece of work the call is.
The ivory you sent me is very exciting - if my scrim piece does not live up to your standards please let me know and we can adjust accordingly. I want to be sure you feel you’ve received your moneys worth. Good luck with the gun show - that’s a quick turn around! Which fossil show will you be at? I never realized there were so many shows there. I hope you enjoy the change of scenery in Tuscan.
Merry Christmas!
Amy Eha

I am the one who bought the necklace today. I just read your bio and realize you are out in the wilds therefore it would be unlikely for me to receive it by Christmas Eve. My brother lives in Kodiak AK so I am aware of the distances etc. in that part of the country. I will give my daughter a picture of the necklace on her birthday and she will be very impressed. The story of you makes the necklace even more unique and beautiful. Just wanted to let you know I support what you are doing off the grid!!

I definitely don't want to give you with the impression that my view of your art is negatively affected because you aren't freezing in Alaska in the wintertime! On the contrary, I congratulate you for creating a life that matches your interests and talents!
Tucson is a wonderful place to be. I lived in various places in the great Southwest for many years.
I watched with great interest the video on your website about the mammoth skull and tusks and the crumbling cliffs. I don't think we humans are accurately assessing the rate of CO2 and methane going back into the atmosphere. But the things that are appearing are amazing, as well as your fortitude and ability to bring them out to be seen.
I am reminded of my Dad who spent the last 20 years of his life in Deming, NM (not that far from Tucson!). He built his own adobe house, made every brick, did all the carpentry, plumbing, and electrical. If he didn't have a tool to do something, he built it. The only thing he couldn't do initially was drill the well. Over the years, he had made the architectural designs, then on site he built the adobe block frames, pulleys, cantilevers. It took him 2-1/2 years working alone to build an efficient, modern 1200 sq. ft. house, with crawl space under for systems and attic over, while he lived in a trailer on the land. That was his dream, all of his working life as a machinist in aerospace manufacturing, to go back to New Mexico, buy a plot of land as remote as possible, that had good soil for stabilized adobe and build that house. I have all his photos and logs of his work. He was also an amateur astronomer, photographer, gardener, food preserver, rockhound. I think one reason he picked Deming was because of nearby Rockhound State Park. Later my brother built his own house in Kodiak when he retired. I spent my working life as a technical writer for computer companies. Now retired I do the art I always wanted to have time for.
Wishing you a rewarding show and plenty of business,
Julie

Yes, it's amazing ivory, Miles! I wanted to thank you for being so responsive. I'm sure you get an endless procession of inquiries and interested people emailing you. So thank you for your time and kindness.
I'll keep an eye out for the new scales! Hope there are some large raw materials coming for grips. Good luck in Arizona, man. Hope the show is lucrative for you.
I ordered some cactus juice and Alumilite. I've been making grips for quite some time out of elk horn and bone. But I've always wanted to try the cactus juice. I have been using a different stabilizer until now. Thanks for your help and knowledge.
Take care, Paul Wood

Hi Miles, my mammoth scrap came in today!!
I wanted to tell you that you give ppl a great deal!! I am already prepping some to carve. I’ve been an ivory carver for almost 30 years now, and I work with Dave Warther a lot, as he lives close to me.
This ivory is very nice, and I thank you for that. I am going to send a finished piece to you as my thank you. I’m so happy to have found a nice partner to do business with now(they’re far and few between in this business, you know that lol)
Sincerely, Jeff Dishong

Dear Mr. Martin,
Thank you for another box of “treasures”. As soon as I see the pieces of different shapes and sizes all kinds of ideas come to mind. I’m excited to work with the nice rectangle piece and really looking forward to cleaning up the tusk tip.
I have included a picture of a practice knife scale (3/4” x 3”). It’s something I did one day while thinking of your suggestion. I think making a nice scale wouldn’t really take that long. Several of the pieces you sent can be worked in a similar way. I’ll enjoy playing with them. Again, thank you for the shipment.
Sincerely,
Amy Eha
Dear Mr. Martin,
Thank you for your email and notes about my order of mammoth ivory. I appreciate your advice and suggestions, especially since I’m new to this product. The compliment about my work is very humbling and I thank you for it. There is something about working with ivory that seems to raise everything up a level. Waiting for the next order is almost like waiting for a Christmas present!
Now, you have raised my curiosity about working with knife scales. To be honest I know nothing about them or the craft. But, since your email, I’ve been doing research and find them to be really interesting. Creating a story that holds your interest on a 4” x 1” piece sounds like a fun challenge. So, to use your words, I am “tempted” and would like to offer to scrim a set of knife scales for you. Once product is in hand it should take 1-2 weeks to complete (hopefully quicker once I get used to it). If you deem it acceptable and are able to sell them we can talk about more. I’d like to trade for mammoth ivory, but again, if what I do is acceptable to you.
So, I’d better go and start sketching. Thank you for your interest.
Sincerely,
Amy Eha

Dear Mr. Martin,
Thank you for your reply. Your advice is truly appreciated. I had so much fun scrolling through your ivory and imagining how each piece could be used that I got caught up in the “pick and choose” and can understand how there are better choices for my skill.
It’s hard to imagine two places with more extreme climate differences than winter in Alaska and Arizona. Not wanting to add to your friend’s stress (and so he can enjoy more time with his precious baby) I would like to take you up on the offer to change my order to $171 of working ivory. The alligator pattern is so unique and I’d love to try working with it, but that will be a down the road project. My work is mostly display art with a few jewelry attempts thrown in. I look forward to learning more from your videos and am excited to prepare the ivory from start to finish. So, I’d like to delete the previous order and change it to $171 of working ivory and wait excitedly for a box of creative pieces.
Best of luck at the winter shows and, again, thank you for your advice.
Sincerely,
Amy Eha
Dear Mr. Martin,
Please take your time. I’m reading up on how to treat ivory, the sanding and polishing, and dealing with cracks. While anxious to play with this new material I want to be sure to treat it properly. Thank you doesn’t seem enough for a box of hand picked product. Please know I’m touched by your help and sharing of knowledge.
Sincerely,
Amy Eha
Dear Mr. Martin,
Last night I received the package of ivory. What a treasure box! I spent several hours sorting, thinking about your notes and sketching ideas. Crazy as it seems I’m looking forward to learning to bring out the “clean” ivory for scrimshaw. The large high grade chunk is beautiful as it is. I’ll have to study it a while and really practice to do it justice. When I do work it I’ll send a picture. Thank you so very much for your generous help.
Sincerely,
Amy Eha

Hi, #1 email
I tried to copy and paste a pix to this but would not paste so here goes.
My hubby and I are retired and struggling to start our own jewelry business. I design, he does the wire work.
He is very , very good but................we need something that others don't have in our area such as your mammouth beads and any other fossil beads you sell.
We don't have much capital yet, but are working on selling ordinary beads right now to obtain some working capital.
Seems like both of us have always been a day late and a dollar short and we would really like to have designer pieces to make a "killing " with, so to speak.
Could you email some pix, and prices of beads you have and teeth that are drilled. We are signed up to do a "Indian pow wow" at Fort Robinson in Nebraska in June and would love to have some really neat pieces to take there.
Any help you can give us would be greatly appreciated.
Any fossil chips that could be drilled for a bracelet or necklace could be used now until we can afford better and the best.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions or help and for responding.
Gloria & Chuck Hill
Lisco, Nebraska
(now wintering near Quartzite, Arizona)
Hey David
Glad the tooth arrived and you are happy. As for the size. Many people selling are full of shit, or do not have any knowledge themselves and have never seen a real timber wolf fang and offer fangs from a lower 48 state wolf that is closer to a coyote. Our wolves can weigh over 200 pounds and be over 7 feet long—bigger then many bears. Some more common wolves that are not timber wolf are only 50 pounds. You probably got a coyote tooth that someone called a wolf. Anyhow got to go and good luck drilling hope it came out ok. Miles.
Monday, January 05, 2009
Dear Miles,
the tooth just arrived to me!!!! WOW!!!! It is incredibly huge if I compare it to my other wolf tooth, it seems like it is prehistoric?
Thank you very much.
Please, tell me how is possible the tooth has 7cm?
I am going to try to drill the small hole in it and let you know. I hope and pray it will stay ok.
Have a nice day
David

Hi Miles,
I hope you stayed high and dry during the flooding in Nenana. I've been watching the situation on the NewMiner website and often think of you.
I'll be taking my beautiful knife to Canada next week on my annual walleye fishing trip. I know the guys will be envious when they see it. It's a unique knife and I'm delighted to have a piece of your artwork. Thanks for making it and selling it to me.

Miles,
Hey, I just opened the package (away from the office for four days). Everything looks great, and the fangs in particular are impressive "in person". I'm still waiting for the center piece to arrive; once it does and I string this all together I'll send you a picture of it.
I have at least one other project for the not-too-distant future that I will be talking with you about.
Thanks for being available and doing what you do. Keep up the good work!

Hi Miles,
Miles you have a eye in art that only a few have. Great piece. Make me a 100 – let use gold!!
Any of the options work for me. Miles – no bull shitting here – Korite – owns 90% of this market. The quality of the gem you have if you set it in gold start retail price would be ~$2,500.00.

Hi Miles,
The fang has found its way to me. Its beautifull! I'm very happy with it. It arrived just in time to be worn tomorrow in a samhuin ritual. Thanks for the opportunity you gave me to buy it, thanks for ur advise on the glue, and since all good things come in triads, thanks for the comic you wrapped the tooth in, nice touch :)
It's been good doing bussiness with you, I will keep an eye on your website,
I wish you safety through the winter, and may you never go hungry,

Eager to show you the Damacus knife that you supplied to me. This is my first job. I just can spend 10-20 minutes per day, and it took me more than 1 month to finish it. Though it still contains some minor imperfections but I’m really happy with it. Thank you for the blade!

Miles,
Wow! Is that ever a beautiful piece of ancient mammoth tusk I just got in the mail.
Thank you!
I've put it away in the back room of my house and I'll watch it carefully
to be ready if any cracks start to develop after its change from your climate
to mine. The temperatures are running between 30 and 45 degrees (we even
had snow last night on the mountains in the San Francisco bay area, where I live),
so the ivory has received a nice welcome to this new, strange place.
Thanks again,
Robin

Thank you also for the owl feathers. We shared them.

Greetings Miles,
Authenticity is my favorite thing. You are the real deal & a genuine survivalist. Your page is a great resource. I'm sure I will refer back to it often. Found it in a Google search for tips on how to repair my mother-of-pearl carved hawk pendant. The head broke off where the hole was drilled through the sides of the neck. It was glued in the past but never stays attatched. It was made by the artist Gary Knack who may have his own page by now. I got side-tracked, intrigued by your site.
I also was hoping to learn the best glue for re-attatching a clasp to a stem of fossilized tusk or bone, I believe. It is part of a set of intricately carved feather earrings. Seeing as to how you are in the Interior these are not materials you'd come across. My son got me the earrings last year while he still lived in Fairbanks. Is it possible you made them? I live on 2 acres in the Kenai Peninsula and respect the rigors of your way of life. Seems you are part of a dying breed and by the looks of your book, must be some kind of a living legend. Your work is quite beautiful. I just wanted to thank you for your tips and wish you all the best in the new year. Carolyn

Miles, I received the fossil Whale bone yesterday. Nice solid piece with a beautiful patina color. It will make for some beautiful knife handles and a conversational topic. Thanks once again Miles. Stay warm this winter and good luck on the Nenana Ice Classic this spring, maybe you will get lucky and win!

I appreciate the effort. Every other response I've been getting has been from mining wholesalers saying a minimum order of $500 with freight or things of that nature. It is good to be working with a person. The end of January would be kind of late, but if that is how long it may take for you to find it, then I can wait. I realize this has a cost, I realize you have mostly larger orders, but I trust your judgment and I think more people ought to do business like you. Aaron

Hello my friend,
Just sent you $60 through pay pal...
Thank you for the medicine that you are sending my way - and the warm words & e-mail conversations.
I will do my best to represent the wolf in the concrete jungle of NYC.
all the best,

Hello Miles: My daughter is absolutely in heaven with some of the items I bought for her from you a few weeks ago. Saving a few for Xmas. Do you have any more copper nuggets..my favorite? She fell in love with the moonstone. Any more? Am dying the moose bone and stabilizing a bit of it to see how it turns out. Let me know on the availability of the two items above and cost. Thanks John

Hello Miles: Recd the goods yesterday. Good load! I am guessing that all the white bone is moose? My daughter will be ecstatic. The copper nuggets are great...I think my favorite of her stuff. Never saw anything like it except some big gold nuggets I have from the late 50s when I lived in Anchorage and gold was 30$/oz. How do you cut the mammoth tooth? Diamond saw? I think I'll have it stabilized first. The balleen is very interesting. I think it will be perfect for what I call a "gents" folder. I am going to have the moose bone stabilized and dyed. What do you do with the mammoth bone...or the dark grey stuff? How does it cut and finish? Thanks alot for the new toys...I love raw materials. I have been a wooworker for forty yrs now and still collect wood...by the thousands of board ft. Have aobut 40,000 bd ft now and still collecting more. Hah! Thanks again.

I have never seen such Craftsmanship in all my years. As a Native American it does my Heart good to see such Spirit and Heart put into one's Creations.
I have a Large Lions tooth could you make it into a necklace for me? If so could you please let me know how to get things moving in order to get started?
I hope this finds you and your Family well;

Miles!! I got the parcel today!
Thank you so much for such a wonderful selection!! The Lynx jaw and Moose hoof were such a surprise! I am so delighted!! Thank you so much for such wonderful service! I am very sorry about the price of postage, but i have an idea. Since you were so good to your word i should like to order some more parts, and whatever i owe you we can put on the next bill. I especially liked the jaws and wondering if you had any others? i also wouldn't mind looking at proces for sections of moose antler, I would quite like a mooses' skull but i imagine that even the small ones would be such an immense size as to render the postage out of my range! Dang. Well i hope this message finds you well, i have a more stable source of income now so money isn't a huge problem, i look forward to dealing with you again in the VERY near future
All the best
Lily

WOW I love the knives I'm on the road currently and will be back in town on thursday, I will send a longer reply then, but I would love the idea of the wolves running with the silver moon and I would like to purchase both knives...
Talk to you soon and I could not be happier with the progress of both blades.
Thank you again so much

Hi Miles,
I got the moose bone and antler tine on Saturday, 9/22/07. The mail service is sure good between Alaska and here apparently. I know the antler tine will work out well. I think the moose bone will also be fine if I can figure out the correct places to cut it to get the best thickness and shape. They are both good pieces and I appreciate your handling the order so fast. I look forward to placing another little order soon.
Thanks, Miles.

Greetings!
Just would like to let you know that the package has arrived today--
wow that was fast! I'm really happy with the teeth, they're great.
I'll definitely recommend you to a friend of mine who also deals in animal remnants for art and jewelry, I think she'd really dig your online store and what it has to offer.
