Mammoth ivory set highly unusual 4.6oz
Alaskan mammoth ivory very interesting. Over 3 3/4 x almost 2 x 1/2 inches. Above grade 1 is sometimes called 'gem grade.' This would be such a set. An utter coating I rarely see and never like this. Almost a graphite material. Do not know what caused it. Maybe a forest fire ages ago and the carbon hardened? (On it's way to being a diamond in another few million years!) Very black takes a polish and stays on. I left it so you can decide to keep or go further and deeper. Looking deeper (see close up picture) appears to be gorgeous blue-green, guessing prevalent and deep. Material weight is heavy with minimization leading me to believe 'old', as in 100,000 years, not the usual 40,000. The downside is it is thin bark so I backed it. This grade is so awesome you could remove backing if not desired, as this material would work for ring cabs or small work, inlays, even peas size would be gorgeous. Or of coarse one top of the line high end knife. Or spacers end caps etc. This is the best quality out of thousands of pounds.
